For GDR citizens, the Altenberger Bitter was a kind of second currency. A week's production was gone within two hours. For a box you could get tiles for the bathroom or spare parts for the Trabi.
It's been around for 180 years.
The ALTENBERGER Gebirgsbitter, the original since 1842.
He survived turbulent times, two world wars, the GDR and the time after reunification. Many epochs shaped it, which shaped the passion of the owners
him & the loyal customers all over the world appreciate him.
Once showed itself to be particularly willing to experiment
the "Köllner Liesl" in the 1920s. The manufactory has a large number of old books with handwritten recipes. Even at that time, some quite exotic spirits and liqueurs already existed.
However, the ALTENBERGER Gebirgsbitter has
remained the focus since 1842.
Jürgen & Christine Baeseler ran the traditional manufactory with a great deal of passion from 1983. On sales days it could happen that around 5 a.m. the night was already over. At least in the summer, when the bedroom window was open and underneath the line in front of the shop door grew happily chatting, sometimes up to two hundred meters in length. For GDR citizens, Altenberger Bitter was a kind of second currency, says Christine Baeseler. You bought it not only to drink yourself, but also to swap. "Within two hours, the weekly production was all."
preserve tradition
with a view towards the future
Since 2022, Thomas Röpke has been managing the manufactory in the 6th generation as part of Altenberger Genuss GmbH. And so the ALTENBERGER story continues & the finest spirits will continue to be handed down by hand according to the old recipes in the strictest secrecy.
